Building Koi Ponds Can Create a Beautiful Relaxing Atmosphere
by Rob Bernabe

Taking a stroll through your back yard and along a beautiful water feature can be incredibly relaxing. One look at the bubbling water cascading down the water fall and into the koi pond can melt your stress away. Building koi ponds is not a difficult task, in fact- building koi ponds is quite similar to building any water feature in your yard. With a few simple steps you can have a koi pond in your backyard, and it will take a lot less work than you may think.

Building koi ponds is much like building a regular pond, however you need to remember that koi can grow quite large and it is important to account for that when you are deciding on how large you want your pond to be and how many koi you would like to have in your pond. A pond that is going to hold koi should have at least 1000 gallons in it and should be at least 4-5 feet deep. Koi will grow quite quickly, so what looks like only a few small fish in a large pond, will quickly take over.

It is also very important to consider the plants that you may want when building koi ponds. You may think that you can include all of the plants and flowers in your koi pond as you would in your water garden; however that is not the case because koi will eat some plants and flowers. Remember as well that koi create a great deal of bacteria and waste as well, however with a quality pond skimmer you should be able to keep your pond clean and healthy.
