How to Build a Koi Pond
by Rob Bernabe

In order to maintain a Koi pond successfully, there are many things you have to keep in consideration. First of all a water garden is not the same thing as a Koi pond. A true water garden typically contains both goldfish and a variety of aquatic plants and area of the pond to be at least two feet deep. A Koi pond is different from a water garden because Koi limit the amount of plant life that you can put in or around the water’s edges.

A Koi pond also must be much larger than a water garden as Koi fish can grow to be the size of large trout or catfish. It is recommended that a Koi pond must have at least 1000 gallons in volume to keep the fish healthy. However it is not just the volume of water that you need to pay attention to. Half of the total area of the pond at least three feet deep and the other half must be at least five feet deep. Remember too that lily pads and other aquatic floating plants can minimize the square surface area of the water causing the fish to be starved of oxygen. So if you are planning a Koi pond, think big!

Most landscape architects recommend installing your pond as close to home as possible. This is so that you can baby-sit it. The closer to your home your Koi pond is the more likely it is you are able to catch troublemakers (children, cats and predators) at the edge of your pond or hear it if something like the pump malfunctions. Also you may need your pond to be as close as possible to the electric outlet that you might possibly need to run your Koi pond’s pump.

Keep in mind too that Koi ponds are not necessarily as attractive as a water garden as it is not a good idea to surround the pond with plant life. Plant life can dirty the water and also low bushes near a pond can harbor cats and raccoons that could steal expensive Koi fish. Plant material that naturally grows in the pond and weather conditions also has an effect on the health of the pond. Many Koi fish cannot survive in climates that have a severe winter.

Unfortunately there is no one universal construction plan for building a Koi plan. This is why it is so important to do it right by consulting first with a professional. There are many factors that can affect a Koi pond, such as watershed that can poison your fish that a professional landscaper will know how to handle. You should also tell your contractor to build a fountain into the design of your Koi pond. This helps to keep the water oxygenated so that your Koi can thrive and grow. As Koi are very expensive there is no point in installing them in an environment that cannot sustain itself as in the end the Koi will die and you will have wasted a lot of money!
