Indoor Ponds Are a Great Option for Keeping Plants and Fish over the Winter
by Rob Bernabe

Have you ever seen an indoor pond? Many people think that ponds belong in the backyard, in the outdoors. However, more and more people are turning to an indoor pond as an alternative to an indoor aquarium for over wintering your water garden plants and koi. An indoor pond does not have to be fancy or elaborate, however if you put a little effort into your design, your indoor pond can be beautiful and a conversation piece as well.

Indoor ponds can be simply constructed out of concrete bricks or landscaping rock. An easy and inexpensive way to build an indoor pond is with landscaping blocks that are placed in an interlocking fashion in a square or other simple shape. By using a pond liner or a pre-made plastic pond liner you will not have to worry about leaks inside your home. Some people use an inflatable kiddie pool for the basis of the pool and then line the exterior with rocks or brick in order to hide the pool.

The main purpose of indoor ponds is often to over winter plants and fish from an outdoor pond because most people live in an environment that is not conducive to leaving the plants outdoors for the winter. With the right environment however, plants and fish can easily survive the winter months and you can move them back out to their outdoor homes in the springtime. An indoor pond should be controlled with a basic thermometer and a pump and circulation system to keep the plants and koi healthy.
